Increases like these are why it pays to be a union member.

Being union is about winning better workplaces – we do that by negotiating better workplace agreements.
After more than 8 months of negotiation with the Victorian State Government, teachers and support staff from Victoria’s public schools took historic strike action in 2026.
Two massive days of strike action led to a stunning victory: the Victorian State Government finally came back to the table with an offer that AEU members could support:
- a $2000 lump sum payment
- pay rises between 28.3% and 32.4% over four years
- maximum face-to-face teaching hours
- reduced meetings
The strike also pressured the Premier to commit the state government to signing a full funding agreement with the federal government – winning more resources for Victorian schools.
AEU Victorian Branch President Justin Mullaly said the outcome was thanks to the powerful campaign of tens of thousands of public school staff.
